How long will this last?

My dog & cat do not like each other at all. It has been 2 1/2 wks that they have been together and I thought by now they would surely be able to tolerate the others presence. I was wrong, they are still barking/growling at the sight of the other. Will they eventually become best buds or am I doomed to having unhappy animals? Any advise?
